September symbolizes different things to all of us. For me, it brings me back to September 7th, 1983, erev Rosh Hashanah. That’s the day that Charles called me for the very first time and asked me out for a date. Tamara, my beautiful daughter, was also born in September, coincidentally during Rosh Hashanah. My mom brought Charles supper to the hospital that night. He still talks about that tongue sandwich she made on raisin challah and he swears that it was the best meal that she ever made!
September is also the end of summer holidays, is the start of a new school year, the Jewish holidays and it seems to be a popular month for everyone to start ‘watching’ themselves – again!
It’s that ‘again’ that makes me laugh because that was me! I always started ‘again’, was on a new diet, told myself that this time would be different etc. etc. etc. I finally realized that if I wanted to be healthy, I had to take dieting out of the equation.
Here’s something to think about – how about having a new plan, a new goal, one that doesn’t have to be weight related? What if you made a commitment to yourself by focusing on other goals instead?
• Try to incorporate more whole, unprocessed ‘clean’ foods in your meals
• Aim to cook more, less take out meals
• Commit to start exercising and/or trying a new exercise
• Be aware of self sabotaging and try to put a positive spin on things
• Be mindful and watch portion sizes
• Be patient with yourself
Remember – If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.
