When my daughter Tamara was out shopping, she spotted this dish towel and it made her think about our family! And why wouldn’t it? I used to give my kids cake for breakfast (periodically).  Actually, we all had cake for breakfast and this stemmed from many childhood memories of me enjoying a piece (or 2) of cake with my own father.

I loveeeee desserts and have a huge sweet tooth. It’s no secret that I would rather eat cake and ice cream over traditional meals any day, but I don’t.

Over the years I’ve adopted a ‘clean eating’ approach to cooking which has really helped me to maintain the weight I lost 13 years ago. It’s not an obsessive approach to eating, but more of a mindful one where I cook more frequently, use ‘real’ foods that are healthier, choose better ‘processed’ foods and eat from ALL the food groups. That includes treats and indulgences too, but not as frequently as I used to.

I don’t believe that foods should be forbidden because when you deprive yourself it seems that you crave that food even more. Have you ever felt that way? I have. What if you tried to choose healthier foods 80% of the time and be mindful when indulging in sweet/salty treats about 20% of the time or less? You may be surprised but, you’ll find that your body will begin to crave and like the healthier choices and your cravings for ‘indulgences’ will begin to diminish. Not never eaten, because that’s not the aim, but more in control. And that’s a good thing 🙂

Be mindful. Eat well. Enjoy life. Don’t be so serious and indulge every once in a while.
